The SOWING Committee's purpose is to develop a statewide Strategic Plan that will open collaboration, coordination, and implement best practices on improving the well-being of women and girls in Georgia.    

Health Committee

 

Co-Chair, Women in Health Committee

 

Dr. Nazeera Dawood is currently the Health Promotion Division Director at Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness. She received her medical doctor degree from Bangalore University in India and master’s degree in public health from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She worked as a research project manager at Emory University for over 5 years. She served on the President’s Commission on Race and Ethnicity, Transforming the Community Project at Emory University and was recognized as the 2010-2011 ‘We are Emory, 100 Community Builders’.  Under Dr. Dawood’s leadership, the collaborative partnerships have grown to over 400 businesses, organization and individuals through the six health promotion coalitions including the Interfaith Coalition which was formed to address major chronic diseases in Fulton County. She is responsible for securing $9,000,000 project funding for a period of three years. Dr. Dawood currently serves as a board member in the South Asian Public Health Association (SAPHA), National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum (NAPAWF) Atlanta and Georgia Alliance for Health Literacy.

Jacqueline Leathers is Social Philanthropist with an expertise in the areas of Business, Government, Healthcare, Community Development, Nonprofit and Global Affairs.  As founder of the nonprofit The Alliance for Economic Empowerment, Inc. she has received numerous awards and recognition for her outstanding service to the betterment of all mankind. She has been recognized by the Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia Senate.  Jacqueline is dedicated to the empowerment of women and has aided in the development and empowerment of women throughout the world by teaching Life skills, entrepreneur training, small business development, coaching, counseling, mentoring, and speaking at women conferences and seminars).

 

Jacqueline was awarded the 2014 Women of Excellence Award by the African Women Leadership Organization for dedication to empowering women globally.

 

Jacqueline, is a sought after speaker and business consultant. She is a certified Nexlevel instructor.

Jacqueline is a Doctoral Degree candidate and a Senate Legislative Assistant for the Georgia General Assembly.

 

Education Committee

 

Dr. Mary Lou Frank currently serves as an educational consultant and also serves as an adjunct faculty member at Brenau University.  Her doctorate in counseling psychology is from Colorado State University. She has served as vice president for academic affairs at Middle Georgia College, associate vice president at Gainesville State College, dean of undergraduate and university studies at Kennesaw State University, and department head of psychology and sociology at North Georgia College and State University. She has served as a professor of psychology at Middle Georgia College, Gainesville State College, Kennesaw State College, and associate professor at the University of Virginia at Wise. Her research has focused on existential psychotherapy, as well as women’s leadership.  She has received the Distinguished Provider Award in Counseling and has been the recipient of grants, national leadership awards, teaching and diversity leadership awards, and awards for community service. Dr. Frank served as the president of the Georgia Association for Women in Higher Education and currently is the vice president and co-founder of the Georgia Women's Institute, vice chair of the Georgia Woman of the Year Committee, and secretary and co-founder of Possible Woman Foundation. As a mediator, she also serves on the International Association of Dispute Resolution Board of Directors.

 

Chief and Dr. Uwa Osimiri is President of the African Women Economic Consortium (AWEC).  She is the President of the Chiist Higher Learning Corporation (CHLC). This organization is the accrediting body for Chiist University, for which she is the founder and Chancellor.  Dr. Uwa Osimiri was one of the founding officers of the North Oakland Macomb Chapter of Jack and Jill of America where she served as Program Director, Vice-President and President. She was instrumental for initiating the African Chapters of Jack and Jill in Umuahia and Aba, in Abia State Nigeria, of which NOM was the sponsoring chapter. 

 

Dr. Uwa Osimiri earned numerous Awards for her work in business, and education. She serves on the Advisory Board for the Women Federation for World Peace. She was a member of the Emerging Minority Businesses Council of Michigan, and received a Certificate of Tribute from Governor Jennifer Granholm for her work with the Governor’s small business initiative.

 

She was nominated for Faculty of the Year Award at the University of Phoenix where she is an Advanced Certified Faculty in the Department of Business Administration and Senior grant writer.

 

She has lectured at Wayne State University, Oakland University, Michigan State University, University of Phoenix, Emory University and countless secondary and grammar school workshops, as well as women empowerment workshops for Chrysler Corporation. Uwa Osimiri who has earned her Doctorate degree in Inter-religious Studies has recently completed her academic work for a doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology with a focus in Intelligence and Psychological Testing.

 

 

Gladys Yarbrough, PhD, is a Network for Enhancing Teacher Quality (NETQ) Project Director at Georgia State University.  Her research focuses on teacher beliefs, literacy, and developing effective community partnerships, and is the Co-Editor-in-Chief and Editor for Community News for Ubiquity: The Journal of Literature, Literacy and the Arts. Dr. Yarbrough teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in literacy. She has been active in community service in her neighborhood and at Georgia State University. Dr. Yarbrough currently serves as a member of the board of directors at The Study Hall, Inc. and the Faculty Advisor of  Omicron Gamma Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society for the College of Education, Georgia State University. She has also served as a classroom teacher and a reading specialist for the Atlanta Public School System and the DeKalb County School System for several years. 

 

Kalin Thomas is a multimedia writer/producer who recently transferred her skills into the cultural tourism and historic preservation industries as Program Director at The Wren’s Nest House Museum.  She oversees all programs at the museum, including all writing programs for middle and high school students in the community. 

 

Kalin’s previous work includes 17 years as an award-winning producer/correspondent for CNN’s travel & lifestyle programs, and years of freelance writing/producing for broadcast, print and online media. Her travels have taken her to six continents; including Antarctica. Kalin is a native of Baltimore, Maryland and a graduate of Howard University.

 

She is a member of Atlanta Association of Black Journalists, Black & Latino Council, Atlanta Writers Club, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

 

 

Glenda Stinson has a diverse background supporting the utility industry. Currently, she is the Supplier and Business Development Consultant supporting the small and diverse supplier base to maximize value to the company’s supply chain. She is committed to developing suppliers to be competitive and knowledgeable of the requirements of contract and bid opportunities. She also supports the numerous partnerships with external organizations in support of supplier development and visibility.

 

Currently, she serves as Board Chair for the Women’s Entrepreneurial Opportunity Project (WEOP).  She is also the company’s liaison for the Premiere Development Program (PDP) and Grow Smart, both of the Small Business Development Center, the Georgia Mentor Protégé Connection of the Education Foundation, Georgia Power's internal mentoring program and Tuck at Dartmouth sponsorship. Glenda served as a judge in the 2014 Miss Black US Ambassador pageant and was recently appointed to the executive committee for the International Women's Think Tank (IWTT).

 

Dr. Sonia Francis-Rolle President, Rhythm of The Wings a Chapter of the Women in Aviation International (WAI). WAl has been encouraging women to seek opportunities in aviation since 1990.  The mission of WAI celebrates women who have made inroads and broken barriers in the aviation world.  WAI also encourages women and girls to seek opportunities in aviation.

Veronica Maldonado-Torres is the program director for the Georgia Mentor Protégé Connection (MPC), the nation’s first state- sponsored program matching small businesses with corporate mentors for one year of intense business development and leadership training. Over the 15 year history the program has graduated over 200 firms and created over 200 jobs in the State of Georgia last year alone.

 A versatile Latina business woman and community leader, she currently serves as a director on the board of the Women’s Entrepreneurial Opportunity Project’s (WEOP).  Veronica also serves on the advisory board for the Georgia Hispanic Contractors Association (GHCA) and Goizuetta School of Business MBA Executive Program. She is a founding board member and Past President- Elect of the National Latina Business Women’s Association – Atlanta Chapter (NLBWA).

 

Economic Security Committee

 

Olivia Urling, Owner of Global Empowerment Technology Group is an empowerment coach who teaches Employment Skills Computer Training to the visually impaired, enabling them to become empowered and employed through technology.

 

She provides powerful, creative and end-results oriented sessions in JAWS, Magic and ZoomText10, Dragon Naturally Speak, NVDA, Mac OS X, iPad, iPod and Windows Eyes.  Her training enables clients to become employed.
